How To Become A Leader At Work.

How To Become A Leader At Work

To become a  leader  at work can be a challenge. You want to be a leader but you do not carry the title. So, how do you go about positioning yourself as a leader at work?
There are many ways, but listed below are some that comes to mind. You can use these actions that will inevitably position yourself as a leader at work without being too obvious about your ambitions.

1. Be responsible.
You want to be a leader at work, learn to take responsibility for anything that has your fingerprint on it. That means, as long as you participate in the project, you have a hand at the failure of the project.
Learn to take responsibility for not just the good things, but even bad ones. Admit to your mistakes - it’s okay to be wrong. You cannot learn if you have not made any mistakes.

2. Believe In Winning
A rising tide lifts all boats – always think win-win. It exists. Just because the world thinks the business world is nasty, and that you need to be manipulative and maneuvering to win, you need not participate in it.
In fact, make it your contribution not to be nasty and bullying in your ways. You want to be a leader at work, believe in your hands as leader to change the world.
The power of positive influence you have on the people around you and the power to inspire people to greater heights is in front of you.

3. Take risks.
Try new things. Take some risk. Make yourself uncomfortable. Do the things that may risk making you look foolish – what do you have to lose? Leaders take risks. They are not afraid of doing what they believe.
What do you believe in that you are willing to take some risk? To be a leader at work, you need to take even simple risks like taking on the project no one wants.

4. Write down everything.
I have often said this. This world is full of people who talk too much and don’t do enough. If you want to be a leader at work, act upon something. Work that plan.
If you have any ideas that are simmering in your mind, write it down. It doesn’t matter if it’s not a plan yet, just write it down.
If you don’t write it down, there is no one to present to and there is no record of the idea. How can it count? If you want to be a leader at work, you have practice writing down everything.

5. Look for opportunities always.
There is no need to create opportunities for yourself to lead. The opportunities to lead are everywhere. You need to be mindful of these opportunities.
I have just mentioned one earlier. Are there any opportunities to take on the project no one wants? If you don’t see opportunities everywhere, you are missing the point.

6. Take feedback.
Be open to criticism, otherwise you are just living off yourself. What does it mean? When you are open to feedback, you are being fed ideas from others that are free. Often times, these ideas come from people smarter than you. They will give you tips on how to improve and how to be better.
That’s what a leader needs - constant feedback. You need feedback to be a leader at work, otherwise you are “feed-own”  and you will go hungry soon. With no new ideas, a leader dries up.

7. Try, Try, Try.
That’s how you open up. Pour out all you got from inside you. Give all you have ideas, thoughts, plans. Feel the vulnerability and learn to like it. When you pour all your ideas out you will need new ones. Where do new ideas come from? From critics who want to tear you down, from well-meaning supporters and from people you least expect.
More comes back to you. You have more to input. It enriches you. That’s how you become a leader at work.

These are the seven actions to position yourself as a leader at work. You want to be a leader at work? Do not be afraid of taking risks. You have more to gain than lose when you open up.

Distribution Failure.

Distribution Failure

The success of a company’s products is directly dependant on whether the company has a good distribution set up. Companies in the FMCG, Telecom and Consumer durable sector rely mostly on distributors to push their products to the end consumers via retailers.

Of late many companies are facing problems with distributors which is resulting in poor distribution thereby resulting in sales being affected as the products are not available to the customers as and when required.

To a certain extent the problem lies with the distributors, but in a majority of the cases it is the company to be blamed for the mess it has created for itself. The company person managing the distributor is the biggest reason in killing the distribution. Even before the distribution collapses, there are warning signals evident 2-3 months prior and if remedial measures are taken on time, the distribution would be smooth and as per the expectation of the company.

The problems faced by the distributors for which the person managing the distributors is responsible are…..
Non moving stock / slow moving stock. Dumped by company person and taking no effort is ensuring liquidation.

Not getting along well with the distributor – EGO clashes.

Scheme settlement not done by company and no effort taken by the company personnel in clearing the same.

Market outstanding beyond limits due to dumping of stocks by company person.
Market coverage issues.

No market working by company personnel. Spending more time at distributor office.

Many companies whose distribution is smooth have taken care of the above mentioned points and have succeeded at the market place.

If there is a problem, the management has to look into the same and one of the above points would be the reason for distribution failure.

Ego.

Ego….

Its better to lose your ego to the one you love, than to lose the one you love because of ego.

Overcome problems in life….

Overcome problems in life….

Coping successfully with the hardships, disappointments, troubles and tragedies of life is really the biggest problem for most people.

We talk of “taking the rough with the smooth”, yet there are many people who really seem to imagine that there ought to be no rough and who look at it bitterly when it comes. They act as though life owed to them to give success and happiness all the time. But this is incorrect.

There may be people who seem to get more than their fair share of it. But, trouble in some shape or form, at some time or other comes to all of us.

Remember that appearances can be misleading. Many people bear bravely a great burden which they manage successfully to hide and there are others with faces and tales of woe.

In working out our own personal philosophy of trouble, let us recognize that it is part of the very pattern of everybody’s life. None of us can escape. We are not alone or unfortunate in this respect..

Further, much as we may fight against the trials and troubles of life, they can play an important part in shaping our character and personality.

If we never experience trouble, how can we ever learn patience or courage or endurance? And if others never suffer, how can we develop sympathy, understanding and helpfulness for them ?

Troubles would seem to have not only an inescapable part but also a necessary part in our experience of life.

It is important to realize that while it is not within our power to determine what happens to us, it is in our power to determine how we will react to what happens to us.

Having formulated our outlook on the troubles which are liable to face us, we can then adopt practical steps which will help us in dealing with the situations as they arise. React to the problems with the will rather than emotion. This does not mean that emotion is to be avoided altogether. We will not be human if we do not experience feelings of sorrow or anxiety or fear. These are a part of the human set up. An unemotional person is often a very cold and unsympathetic one.

We must learn to keep our emotions under control.  We must not over react to situations. If we react, we would be prone to taking hasty decisions which would prove otherwise in the long run. Where decisions can be postponed, it is good to do so until calm and more rational view can be taken. Never take any decision when you are angry.

Instead of brooding over problems, think of practical ways to resolve them however small they may be. Being optimistic will save you from going to pieces when faced with testing times in life.

young always.

 young always….

Youth is not a time of life. It is a state of mind. It is the temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, an appetite for adventure over love of ease.

Nobody grows old by merely living number of years. People grow old by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.

Worry , doubt, self destruct, fear and despair turn the growing sprit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every being’s heart the love of wonder, the sweet amazement of the stars, the undaunted challenge of events, the unfailing childlike appetite for what next and the joy of the game of living.

You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt, as young as your self confidence, as old as your fear, as young as your hope, as old as your despair.

So long as your heart receives messages of beauty, cheer, courage and power, you are young.

When all the central places of your heart are covered with pessimism, then only you are grown old indeed.

How to Succeed in Sales ?.

How to Succeed in sales ?.

With years of experience in sales in various sectors- consumer durables, FMCG, Telecom…. I have managed to put in a few points which would be of immense help in your careers. Points are not in serial and you may choose to read even from bottom to top or even from the middle.

·         If you try you might. If you don’t, you won’t.
·         Proper planning helps in better performance.
·         Success at the cost of your health is a failure.
·         Never expect your customers to tell you that they are not satisfied with your level of service.
·         A plan is no good if it does not result in increased business and revenue.
·         Always participate in discussions in meetings.
·         Knowledge is useless if you do not apply it.
·         Be on time every time. Remember everyone’s time is important.
·         If you are too comfortable on the job, there is something wrong and something bad is in store.
·         Be consistent with what you say and do.
·         Under promise but over perform.
·         It’s a mistake to feel that the customer is fortunate to do business with the company.
·         If your boss is shouting on your under performance, do not take it personal. Remember he is attacking an issue and not you as an individual. Try to improve your performance and do not get upset.
·         If you try short cuts, it will cut short you.
·         Effort will never go waste. Also, there is no alternative to effort.
·         Congratulate your staff for any good work done.
·         Do not smoke in front of customers/ partners.
·         Always keep your surroundings clean. Ensure your table is neat without any papers lying on it.
·         Spend 10 minutes in the morning everyday and list out the things that need to be done. Review at end of the day.
·         Don’t let your EGO get the better of you.
·         It’s not the big things that you do to your customers that matters. It’s the small things that matter most.
·         Ensure all the important phone numbers are stored in your mobile.
·         Be aware of the amount of time you spend. Important tasks need more time.
·         Be well dressed and do not support long hair. Ensure your shoes are polished.
·         Spend more time with customers who have got the ability to purchase your products and services.
·         Do not forget the one’s below you on your way up. When you come down, you have to face them.
·         When out of office, please call someone to find out what’s happening once in 3 hours.
·         Seek guidance when ever required. Do not hesitate.
·         Utilize all the resources available at your disposal.
·         Think before you respond to any critical issue.
·         Be loyal and ethical in your dealings.
·         Work hard and smart.
·         Always try new ways of doing business.
·         Wish your colleagues and partners on birthdays & anniversaries.
·         Know the product and service you are selling. You will be shocked, many do not know.
·         Always keep an eye on what competition is doing. It will help you alter your strategy for your benefit.
·         Do not enter into arguments with customers / partners. Take their feedback and share the concerns with the management.
·         Have some urgency in doing things.
·         Do not take your customers for granted. The day you take them for granted, you start losing them.
·         You have to motivate yourself.
·         All play and no work will not work.
·         Always check whether you are adding value to the customer.
·         Every day is your day. You decide whether you are going to make it good or bad.
·         You got to know from where the additional business is going to come. It just won’t come easy.
·         Always develop good habits. Copy habits of winners.
·         Remember customers will buy from you if they like you. They will go elsewhere if they do not like you.
·         Don’t relax after a big sale. Plan for another.
·         Meet at least five new people every week.
·         Always separate personal and business relationship. Don’t ever mix them up.
·         Regularly improve your skills.
·         Introspect yourself whether you are an asset or liability to the organization. Never be the latter.
·         If you always want to sell cheap, then you are not a professional sales person.
·         If you want to develop rapport, you have to be face to face. You cannot build rapport over the phone.
·         Be good / nice to secretaries.
·         Do you make things happen or react to them?  Be the former.
·         Be yourself. You can’t fool everyone.
·         Always meet the top man and then go downwards rather than meeting the bottom guy. You will be stuck if you start from the bottom.
·         Do not crack jokes which hurt people.
·         Ignore people who drop in unexpectedly. They will be wasting your precious time.
·         Sell your customers what they want, not what you think they require.
·         Do not allow your partner to pay for the food bills. Carry enough cash always. Some hotels do not accept credit cards. Do not fall into an embarrassing situation asking the partner to pay for the bills.
·         Start early and work late.
·         Monday mornings and Friday evenings must be hard working and not hardly working. Most of the competition guys are in the holiday (weekend) hangover.
·         Spend few hours in a day visiting customers / partners.
·         Believe in yourself, your company and its products.
·         Always take feedback from customers / partners. You will get good insights.
·         Be angry at yourself as you are to others.
·         The best time to meet customers is early morning.
·         If you are doing the same thing like last year, you are not growing.
·         Be ready for change.
·         Always say SORRY for any wrong done unintentionally.
·         Physically and mentally be present in meetings.
·         Focus on your job, not others.
·         Write down important points. Don’t rely on your memory.
·         Don’t talk bad about your customers / partners.
·         Do not relate efforts with results. Both are different.
·         Do not give reasons. People are only interested in results.
·         Speak only when required and be to the point.
·         Know how your product is different from competition.
·         When you lose, don’t lose the lesson. Be concerned, but never feel defeated.
·         Don’t tell the customers how good you are. Show them.
·         Celebrate success.
·         Always sport a smile on your face. You will project yourself as a positive person.
·         Don’t waste your energy in gossiping.
·         Always aim for the sky. You will be amazed at the potential you possess.
·         Always follow the leader, not the follower.
·         To avoid delays, always set your watch five minutes ahead. You will be on time and avoid stressful situations.
·         Always call back if you have told the person you will call back. If possible call him within an hour.
·         Read all correspondence / mails.
·         Stress more on sales rather than marketing. Sales bring profits.
·         Don’t waste time on classroom training. Be practical.
·         Spend time providing customer service than speaking about it.
·         Don’t give up under any circumstances. You may be very near to success..
·         Think fast. Move faster.
·         Believe in team work. You cannot go about it solo.
·         At parties, do not consume more liquor. Your credibility could be lost in one day.
·         Keep trying till the last minute of the day.
·         When you are feeling low, try making more calls to customers. You will be surprised with the results.
·         Spend some time alone on thinking how to improve.
·         Ensure you have sufficient rest.
·         Ensure your business comes from various partners rather than one big guy.
·         A customer will form an opinion in the first 5 minutes of meeting you.
·         Always strive to make your company number 1.
·         To maintain health, exercise regularly. Exercise or excess size – the choice is yours.
·         Always be willing to learn.
·         Do not give reasons why it cannot be done. Give reasons how it will be done.
·         Spend quality time with your family members.
·         Go on an annual vacation once a year with your family.
